Yamaha has recently submitted patents for an all-electric motocross bike, as leaked images suggest. The Japanese company has already produced the TY-E trials e-bike, currently competing at a professional level. The new model, potentially named YZ-E, is expected to enter competitive racing soon.
While testing the TY-E, Yamaha realised that adding a flywheel and a traditional clutch gave the motorcycle much better performance during slow-speed manoeuvres and instant acceleration during race starts. For the dirt bike, Yamaha has used a torsion damper with the gearbox, as the use case for the two motorcycles is different.
The result of doing so is better throttle response again, as racing in the dirt requires variation in the acceleration and the key to this is smooth delivery. Yamaha has not disclosed any additional details about the battery pack or its specifications in the patent images, as the focus is on the propulsion system. There is no information available regarding Yamaha’s launch plans for the motorcycle, but it is anticipated that the company will unveil a prototype in the coming months.
