Adam Cianciarulo and Justin Brayton slammed the AMA’s one-lap penalty on Jett Lawrence for a gate-flinch start, calling it “ludicrous” and saying the punishment “does not fit the crime” for a mistake that gave him no advantage. Both felt a five or ten-second penalty would have been fairer and urged the AMA to allow instant, on-the-fly decisions from respected ex-racers like Ezra Lusk or Andrew Short, rather than relying on rigid, set penalties.
While praising the progress under Mike Pelletier, they stressed that “so many things in dirt bike racing are unique” and require flexibility. In a tight championship fight, they warned, a call like this could “unfairly decide the title.”
