Daniel Blair recently shared details about the behind-the-scenes struggles he faced in the Supercross broadcast booth, particularly leading up to the Oakland round. According to Blair, producer Bondo and Ricky Carmichael pulled him aside and asked him to change his approach. “They asked me to be less me and more of a broadcaster,” Blair recalled. Carmichael felt Blair was analyzing too much and wanted more space to break things down himself. Blair disagreed with the change but complied, even staying up late studying Lee Diffey’s style to match what they wanted.
However, the broadcast didn’t go well. Blair described it as “empty, hollow, and flat,” and when he checked fan reactions afterward, he was stunned. “The comments were very positive for me—really positive—and terrible for RC,” he said. Fans called for Carmichael to be replaced, a reaction Blair didn’t want. Despite the backlash, neither Bondo nor Carmichael ever followed up with him. “Not a single word to this day about Oakland,” he admitted.
By the next round in Arlington, Blair was back on the floor, excited to cover the Futures class and continue his passion project, Blair’s Breakdown. Reflecting on the situation, he made it clear that he never did Blair’s Breakdown for money—only for the fans. While he remained professional, the tension over his role in the booth may have contributed to his eventual departure from the broadcast team.
