Rumors are swirling that legendary motocross rider Antonio Cairoli may compete in select AMA Motocross events in 2025 aboard a Ducati. This would not only mark Cairoli’s return to high-profile racing but also the historic debut of Ducati in the U.S. off-road racing scene. The collaboration could become one of the most iconic moments in motocross history, blending a world-class champion with a globally renowned brand venturing into new territory.
Ducati’s Challenge: AMA Homologation Rules
However, a significant hurdle looms for Ducati: meeting the AMA’s homologation requirements to compete in the U.S. Nationals. Here’s a breakdown of the key rules:
- Production Quantity: At least 200 units of the motocross model must be manufactured and made publicly available in the U.S.
- Public Availability: The bike must be available for purchase through dealerships before the start of the season.
- Submission Deadline: Manufacturers must submit the bike and all required documentation to the AMA by the end of March, before the start of the MX season, giving Ducati just 45 days to meet these criteria.
Ducati can’t race a prototype in the U.S. Nationals unless it meets the AMA’s homologation rules. If the AMA makes an exception, though, it could be possible for Ducati to compete, adding another layer of intrigue to this historic potential debut.
Is It Feasible?
With the tight deadline and significant production and distribution requirements, Ducati faces a steep challenge. Homologating a brand-new motocross bike requires efficient manufacturing, logistics, and compliance processes, all within a narrow timeframe. While Ducati is known for its engineering excellence, meeting this timeline might prove almost impossible.
What’s at Stake?
If Ducati manages to overcome these obstacles, it would solidify the brand’s place in motocross history. For fans, the prospect of seeing Cairoli racing a Ducati in the AMA Nationals is electrifying. Yet, with time running out, the dream faces significant practical challenges.
Gatedrop asked the nine time world champ Cairoli when we caught up with him at A1 if he would like to race the Ducati in America and if it was possible to do so, he told us:
“Yeah, I mean, I’ve always been a fan of the AMA Nationals. I was here in 2022 for some rounds, it was just for fun, so I had some good results also, and yeah, you never know to launch the bike in the US, it would be a nice thing with an Italian rider and an Italian bike, so we are not on the plan yet, but yeah, if there is an opportunity, I would like it.”
