The FIM World Supercross event in Lyon, initially scheduled to be held at the Groupama Stadium, the home of the OL football team, on Saturday, July 22, is currently under scrutiny. Last week, rumors about the event gained momentum in France and quickly spread during the US MX round in the United States. Managers responsible for drivers participating in both championships have been cautioned against purchasing tickets for the event in France.
After consulting with relevant individuals, it appears that we are approaching a stage where we can move beyond mere rumors. Although official confirmation is lacking, the chances of seeing Ken Roczen in France on Saturday, July 22, aside from casual sightseeing, are highly unlikely. This is primarily due to a lackluster presale of tickets and the prohibitively high cost of renting the Groupama Stadium. Consequently, the WSX event in Lyon would not have been financially viable, prompting considerations of its cancellation.
As a consequence, the French round will be substituted with an event in Abu Dhabi, taking place on November 18, one week prior to the Australian final. Unfortunately, this change means that French fans will need to travel a bit further. It also results in a significant gap between the opening event in England on July 1 and the subsequent one on September 30 in Singapore. However, this situation might bring renewed excitement to the US Outdoor championship, with some “middle class” participants redirecting their focus from the WSX championship.
Adding to the disappointment, the German event in Düsseldorf may also face uncertainty and potential cancellation for similar reasons. This setback poses challenges for the WSX series. Once again, we advise exercising caution in making definitive announcements and await official communication. If you had plans to attend the WSX event in Lyon, it is advisable to postpone booking your travel arrangements, hotels, and other related arrangements.
