The 250SX East main event in Detroit on February 15 was controversially restarted with just seven seconds left on the clock, sparking confusion among fans. AMA Director of Racing Mike Pelletier, in an explanation to VitalMX, clarified that the decision followed the rulebook precisely.
Under the new 2024/2025 rules, when a race is stopped after the leader completes three laps but before the time expires, it is restarted from a staggered standing start. The rule states: “When a race is stopped after the leader completes three (3) laps but prior to time expiring on the race clock, the following procedures will apply: The race will be restarted as soon as possible from a staggered standing start in the starting area.” Since the red flag was waved with seven seconds left, the race followed this rule.
Additionally, the rule requires a minimum of three laps to be run after a restart, regardless of the time left. As stated: “In all cases, the remaining race distance following a restart will be at least three (3) laps.”
Confusion arose from a television graphic showing the old 90% rule, which was a production error and not a miscommunication from the AMA. Pelletier explained that removing the 90% rule was done to eliminate ambiguity in the rulebook and ensure clarity.
Max Anstie, who was leading, lost his advantage after the restart but managed to secure second place, extending his championship lead to nine points. Levi Kitchen capitalized on the restart and won the Detroit race.
