Red Bull Factory KTM Jeffrey Herlings lost the overall win after receiving a three-position penalty in the first moto for going off the track at turn two and re-entering at turn three – on top of receiving a fine. He initially finished third but his result was adjusted to sixth due to the penalty.
Herlings then won race two but due to the penalty he ended up third on the podium. Herlings said after:
“First off, over the weekend, to finish third in the championship I am quite happy with, my starts have been a weak point all year. To still come out with a podium today is okay”.
“What the FIM did today to me is not acceptable. Yes, I got pushed out of the track, but to dock me three places and to take away my overall like this… They said, ‘we want you to pay 650 euro but we will not change the result.’ That’s basically what they said.
“I don’t want to take anything away from Jorge, he was the best for the year. Start is one thing and he is the king of that and furthermore he is the champion, so a big congratulations for that.”
